For the One Who Keeps It All Running

Celebrating the Sole Stewardess

If you run an interior on your own, you already know what the job takes.

You're the one who's up first to get the laundry going. You know exactly where the spare champagne flutes are, and you can turn a cabin, set a table and pour a sundowner in the time it takes most people to find their radio.

So much of what you do happens quietly, in the background, and most of it is never seen. This is a moment to stop and recognise it, because it deserves to be recognised and valued.

Guests remember how it felt. You’re the reason it felt that way.

A Note of Respect

An Underrated and Highly Valued Role

Of all the interior roles, this is one I have a particular respect for.

Being a sole stewardess is something quite special. You get to know the boat inside out, create your own way of working and have a real sense of ownership over the guest experience. Every day can be different, and there’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing the whole interior come together through your own organisation, care and attention to detail.

What Does a Sole Stewardess Do?

Put simply, you are the interior department.

And that’s what makes the role so varied. One day can take you from preparing breakfast and welcoming guests, to turning over cabins, managing laundry, checking provisions, preparing for an arrival, setting a table or making sure everything is just right before guests step through the door. You’re responsible for the details that make the interior feel effortless, while also being ready to adapt when the day, or the guests, take things in a different direction.

There’s a real skill in that. You work closely with the Captain and chef, support the wider crew when needed, and become an important part of how the whole boat feels and functions.

The Character of the Role

What Makes a Great Sole Stewardess?

Being a sole stewardess takes a certain kind of person. Someone who notices the small things, takes pride in creating a lovely environment and genuinely enjoys looking after people.

Being a great sole stew isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about knowing your boat, understanding your guests and finding your own way of making the role work.

Independent

They don't need to be told what to do next.

Organised

They have a system for everything, and it holds on the busiest days and the bad ones too.

Resourceful

No shop nearby? They'll find a way.

Self-Reliant

And they also know when to ask for help.

Adaptable

When the plan changes at lunchtime, they change with it.

Proactive

They see something that needs doing and simply get on with it.

Decisive

They make a call and move on.

Sound familiar? If you're reading this thinking “that's me”, it probably is.

Built for the Role

Most yacht stewardess training assumes you’ll be part of an interior team.

As a sole stewardess, there may be no Chief Stewardess on board to learn from or turn to when you’re unsure. That’s why AiMZ created The Sole Stewardess Specialist Course, purposely designed around the realities of the job rather than being the next rung on the career ladder.

It’s one-to-one, taught with a coaching approach throughout, and comes with a Support Handbook made to live in the laundry, the pantry or your pocket. A companion to refer to when you need a reminder, some guidance or want to check you’re on the right track.

And the support doesn’t have to end when the course does. Sometimes you don’t need another course, just someone experienced who understands what you’re dealing with and is there when you need to talk something through.

You don’t have to do everything. You have to know what matters.
To Every Sole Stew

You're Not Just “The Stew”

Maybe nobody says this often enough, so I will. You're not just “the stew”. You're the reason the interior works, the owner comes back relaxed and the Captain never has to worry about what's happening inside.

When you're the one responsible for making everything work, looking after yourself isn't an indulgence. It's part of the job.

And if you'd like someone in your corner while you do it, that's what I'm here for.
